Description

Playful Arts Festival 2014 - Four-day festival exploring playful arts. Art in which you are the player. That is Playful Arts Festival in a nutshell. The festival takes place in public space and in the newly renovated Willem II factory in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch for short), the Netherlands. In the third week of June, the historical city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands became a playground for people of all ages. The contemporary art manifestation Playful Arts Festival presented games, performances, exhibition, workshops and talks with a focus on playful arts. The festival drew together international artists, designers, curators, performers and the general audience for four days to explore the cross-overs of art, play and social interaction.

History

In 2011 Iris Peters (bART, now WOT) and Zuraida Buter (zo-ii) met each other to talk about a 6 week game art event Iris was organising in Den Bosch called Game City. After the event was over they started discussing a new festival they could work on together to showcase the possibilities for the games medium. That led to the pilot project Playful Arts Festival in 2012 with the theme Collaborative Play. The audience was invited to play together or spectate. We had games from national and international designers (Hokra, ibb and obb, Samurai Gunn, Fingle etc.) a workshop handclapping games digitized by PAF12 special guest Kaho Abe and a ‘Performance Night Out’ evening where ‘spectacle’ games could be played. Early 2013 Playful Arts Festival had a pop-up location at Art at the Warehouse. In November 2013, they organised The Art of Play, a one day event with talks and workshops as a prelude to the Playful Arts Festival 2014.
